Dalit atrocities act invoked in temple assault

Jun 2, 2011,

COIMBATORE: Four days after a Brahmin priestallegedly attacked a Dalit boy for entering and defiling a local temple near Mettupalayam, the local police on Wednesday has booked the accused priest and his son under relevant sections of Scheduled Caste and Tribe (Prevention of atrocities) act. Initially, police had refused to charge the duo under the stringent act and had booked them for causing voluntary hurt and using obscene language.

"The local police filed the charges only after the intervention of senior police officials. The victim, Vinith, had met the superintendent of police and presented his side of the story and it became evident that he was targeted for being a dalit," said P Krishnamoorthy, his advocate and social activist.

K Vinith was attacked for entering the temple last Saturday along with his younger sister. The high priest of the temple, S Jampunathan, and his son, repeatedly assaulted him for entering the sanctum sanctorum. They were arrested and remanded to custody on Sunday.
