Nagpur: The Republican Party of India faction led by Ramdas Athavale joining hands with the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine is tipped as the next big thing after Sharad Pawar parting ways with the Congress. The panic the move has set, mainly in the NCP, indicates that the new political combination of `Bhimshakti-Shivshakti' could be a game-changer in state and perhaps the national level when Dalit votes would be sought to be transferred en masse to the right-wing parties for the first time. Excerpts from an exclusive interview with Athavale:
Q: What caused the change of heart and shifting to a political path that is new?
A: For two decades, the RPI was stuck with the Congress ideology. But apparently, the Congress played the Dalit vote bank politics as a means to win power and position. The Congress would rely on Dalit vote in Lok Sabha and assembly elections but would forget us in local bodies' elections. This stunted the RPI growth at the grassroots and also caused disarray in Dalit leadership. I am not saying NCP and Sharad Pawar did nothing for me. I was made a minister and four of my party men were made ministers. Later, I was given chance to contest and win Pandharpur Lok Sabha seat. But things changed after that. One thing led to another and I had to part ways with the NCP in 2009.
Q: But your move of joining the so-called communal combine is seen as a trade-off with Ambedkarite movement?
A: That is a wrong perception. I will never deviate from the patch of Ambedkar-Phule ideology. On February 25, I just happened to pay a courtesy visit to Balasaheb Thackeray to greet him on his birthday. In a casual conversation, Balasaheb remarked that Shivshakti (represented by Sena) could work wonders along with Bhimshakti (Babasaheb Ambedkar ideology). The idea appealed to my party colleagues too. The BJP was also roped in. Later, I met BJP president Nitin Gadkari and Gopinath Munde to discuss the prospects and remove any misgivings.
This new combination is being tested to find new social, economical possibilities to uplift the Dalits who have remained in the penumbra of powerless existence, ditched by vote bank politics of the Congress and the NCP. History shows that Babasaheb Ambedkar was defeated by the Congress in 1952 and 1954 (from Bhandara Lok Sabha seat). The Dalit icon had called the Congress a 'house on fire' and asked people to abandon it and form an anti-Congress political force. I am on the same path. There is nothing unholy in it. We want to see the Congress and NCP out of power, to pay the price for ignoring the Dalits on whose votes they rule the state and the country. In past, Dalit leader Khobragade too had chosen Jan Sangh as an ally.
Q: What is the arrangement with the saffron combine?
A: Right now, we are coming on one platform to wage a joint public agitation against burning issues of corruption, unchecked price-rise and increasing atrocities on Dalit community. A firm political arrangement and formula for a pact will be worked out only in October after preparing ground for it on the respective party-level. On June 9, the three parties will together march to Matralaya on the three issues. If the Shiv Sena stands to gain by being with us, we will naturally expect a share in power. That will give Dalits a new hope.
Q: But you lead only one faction. The other RPI factions led by Prakash Ambedkar and Kawade, Kumbhare are not on the same page.
A: I have a pan-Maharashtra presence. Other factions have shrunk to smaller district-level pockets. Some leaders like Namdeo Dhasal of Dalit Panther have stood by me even when I first went with the Congress in 1990 and are with me today. I am confident the Ambedkarite population will understand the significance of my political move and reap its benefits.
