UP rebuts Wasnik's chrage, cites data

LUCKNOW: Taking a strong exception to the charges made by union minister for social justice and empowerment Mukul Wasnik that atrocities against dalit had touched a new high in the BSP rule, UP government claimed that the data issued by the National Crime Records Bureau had proved that crimes against dalit and women in UP had substantially decreased.

"The union minister must know that Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in the country and has a large number of SC/ST population, therefore the cases of dalit harassment must be seen in ratio of the population. The state government is taking effective action under prevention of crimes against SC and ST Act in the cases of harassment of these sections," an official statement issued by the government on Saturday said.

The state and the Centre had been sparring over the issue ever since former IAS and Mayawati's confidant PL Punia, was appointed the chairman of the national SC/ST commission last year, and had claimed that cases of dalit harassment were not being registered in UP and the atrocities against them had broken all previous records.

Wasnik, who was in the state capital on Friday for a review meeting with government officials had reiterated Punia's allegations at a press conference.
