LUCKNOW: Claiming that there has been a steady rise in atrocities against dalits in Uttar Pradesh, Union minister for social welfare Mukul Vasnikdemanded setting up of committee of SC MPs and MLAs headed by the chief minister - a mandatory body - to help in speedy redressal of legitimate grievances.
Vasnik also expressed great concern at the pending cases against the class and their slow disposal in the state. Maximum number of complaints received in this regard, he claimed, were from UP. A total of 7500 complaints were registered only last year which is highest in the country, the minister said and called for a pro-active role by the state machinery.
Vasnik, who had come to attend a review meeting with the state officials, claimed that most of the points and queries raised by him during the interaction went unanswered. "It is surprising that despite spiralling graph of dalit harassment, no action was taken against any official during the BSP rule," he said.
The Centre, he said, has raised the funds for SC/ST welfare from Rs 390 crore to Rs 850 crore this year. Exhorting UP Congressmen to monitor the expenditure of the funds, the minister said the government must be made accountable and siphoning off of the amount must be plugged.
