Fifty-one individuals and 10 institutions were felicitated with Maharashtra government's prestigious 'Dalit Mitra' award for 2009-10 by state minister for Social Justice Shivajirao Moghe here today.
The award carries a Rs 15,000 cash, a citation and a memento.
Speaking on the occasion, Moghe said the awardees should help in bringing back the neglected section of society into the mainstream.
Lauding the sacrifice of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, he said the Constitution of India drafted by Ambedkar has helped retain democracy in the country while democracy, the system and governments in neighbouring countries have collapsed.
Moghe said about 13.50 lakh backward class students in Maharashtra are receiving scholarship directly through their bank account. The state government is opening 100 residential schools for tribals shortly, he added.
Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anil Deshmukh and Minister of State for Social Justice Sachin Ahir, were also present on the occasion.
